Missouri Western State University has been designated by the state of Missouri as the official applied learning institution in the state.

Applied Learning refers to student learning that occurs in non-traditional contexts on college and university campuses. This includes any activity outside of the classroom in which students use disciplineā€specific knowledge to participate in undergraduate research, internships and practica, study abroad, and service-learning projects. Students who take part in applied learning get an education that better prepares them to enter the workforce or pursue graduate study.

Service Learning is a type of applied learning that directly engages students with personal and civic responsibility. Community partnerships involve students in projects that address local needs while developing discipline specific skills, critical thinking, and commitment to the world at large.
